MetaCyc EC 1.3.1.111 -- geranylgeranyl-bacteriochlorophyllide a reductase

Parent Class: EC-Numbers1 -- Oxidoreductases1.3 -- Acting on the CH-CH group of donors1.3.1 -- With NAD(+) or NADP(+) as acceptor

Synonyms: geranylgeranyl-bacteriopheophytin reductase, bchP (gene name)

Systematic Name: bacteriochlorophyll-a:NADP+ oxidoreductase (geranylgeranyl-reducing)

Unification Links: BRENDA:1.3.1.111, ENZYME:1.3.1.111, IUBMB-ExplorEnz:1.3.1.111

Reaction:
bacteriochlorophyll a + 3 NADP+ ← geranylgeranyl bacteriochlorophyllide a + 3 NADPH + 3 H+

Unofficial Reactions:
bacteriochlorophyll b + 3 NADP+ ← geranylgeranyl bacteriochlorophyllide b + 3 NADPH + 3 H+,
bacteriopheophytin a + 3 NADP+ ← geranylgeranyl bacteriopheophytin + 3 NADPH + 3 H+

Enzymes and Genes:
geranylgeranyl-bacteriochlorophyll a reductase: bchP ( Rhodobacter capsulatus )

Summary:
The enzyme catalyzes the successive reduction of the geranylgeranyl esterifying group to phytyl, reducing three out of four double bonds, and transforming geranylgeranyl bacteriochlorophyllide a via phyta-2,10,14-trienyl bacteriochlorophyllide a and phyta-2,14-dienyl bacteriochlorophyllide a to bacteriochlorophyll a. The enzyme can also accept the pheophytin derivative geranylgeranyl bacteriopheophytin, converting it to bacteriopheophytin a.
